Chicago Condo: X/O Condominiums
Building Address:
1712 South Prairie Avenue, Chicago, IL 60616If you had a lineup of Chicago buildings, how hard would it be to identify the Sears Tower, the Hancock Building or the "Corncobs Towers"? You'd probably be able to point out all three. These architectural structures have come to define the Chicago skyline and are recognized simply by their distinct contours. After its construction, the X/O Condominiums will join the ranks of buildings with a "look" all their own. The design of the ultramodern, double towers resembles a stylized "X" and is sure to draw attention as one of the city's most unusual and inventive developments.
The X/O Condominiums are the handiwork of internationally renowned architect Lucien Lagrange, who has stationed his firm in Chicago and holds a long list of work throughout the city. The new project will instill the South Loop with a fresh, 21st century spin, changing the face of the neighborhood and giving Chicago's south side a taste of luxury living.
The mere shape of the condominium is a feat of state-of-the-art engineering and architectural design. Both towers angle in at the middle and out on the bottom and top, creating the "X" form for which it will be recognized. Inside the glass facade residents enjoy spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom condos with 60-square-foot private terraces and great views of the Chicago cityscape and Lake Michigan. The number of units on each floor is limited to no more than nine (some levels have only four units), so over 50 percent of the residences offer dual exposure-some with private access to the complex's quarter-acre landscaped park and botanical garden.
In accordance with the expansive outdoor green space, X/O condo owners will be happy to know Lagrange designed the place with the environment in mind. The development is slated to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification when it is completed, which means it holds to eco-friendly engineering standards and helps create a healthier environment. Other building features include 24-hour door service, secure garage parking, high-speed elevators, indoor bike room and additional storage lockers. Residents with four-legged members of the family will appreciate the on-site dog run, but the pièce de resistance of life at X/O is Spa X/O, a sprawling fitness and relaxation center spanning 13,000 square feet.
Highlighted by the tranquil Aqua Grotto, a beautiful circular pool with waterfall whirlpool, the spa also entices residents to pamper themselves with massage sessions and facials, or a few minutes in the sauna to let the stress of daily city life melt away. Exercise equipment is on-hand for a convenient workout and there's even a small cafe and the wine bistro where residents can catch a bite or enjoy a drink with neighbors. But as soon as the spring is in sight and that sun peaks through the clouds, the happening place to hang will no doubt be X/O's rooftop garden.
Back in the individual condo units, luxury living takes hold with upmarket amenities and designer finishes. Homebuyers will have their choice of oak, beach, Brazilian cherry, walnut, or maple hardwood floors and top-of-the-line bedroom carpeting. The kitchens offer European-style 42" cabinets, granite countertops and island, and the cook of the household will love the professional-grade stainless steel appliance package. All units have nine- to ten-foot ceilings and spectacular floor-to-ceiling windows. The complex's penthouses offer a few special upgrades such as elegant entry foyers, tailored kitchen layouts, in-unit laundry rooms, and multiple balconies.
Condos at X/O range from 600 to 2,711 square feet with prices reaching as high as $2.2 million for the penthouse properties. On the lower end, one-bedrooms are available for prices between the high $200,000s and low $400,000s.
The X/O Condominiums is a collaboration of Lucien Lagrange Architects, Kargil Development and Frankel & Giles real estate firm. Together, the team has crafted a fresh and distinctive addition to the southern Chicago skyline that puts originality and innovation before all else.
